A new, non-profit organisation set up to care for unwanted or homeless senior cats in Northern Ireland.
A word from Ballyclare Cattery Owner and Lila's Legacy Founder, Janet:
Named after a senior rescue cat who came to spend the last 6 months of her life with me, Lila's Legacy is situated in the large sun-room of the on-site bungalow at Ballyclare Cattery. The project is a retirement home for abandoned felines, at a time in their lives when they need tender loving care the most.
We work alongside local rescue agencies and veterinary practices to provide a safe, warm and comfortable permanent home for seniors who are unlikely to find a 'furever' home. This can be because of ongoing medical conditions and the often expensive vet bills involved in caring for the elderly.
We supply and administer any necessary medication and supply quality food, tailored to suit residents individual needs. We also give our seniors the time and TLC that they richly deserve in old age.
''Hi, I'm Oscar and I'm around 12/13 years old. 6 years ago my mummy went to work abroad for 6 months. She then decided she didn't want to come home so she gave up our house but made no provision for me. Her friend Aunty Angela, who had been feeding me while she was away, tried to move me into her home, but I didn't get along with her feline family. So I have been wandering the streets on my own for the last 6 years. Auntie Angela came down to my street often to give me food and make sure I was ok but I wasn't always about and she worried about me. Then she heard about Lilas Legacy, went to check the joint out and decided it was the perfect spot for me-she couldn't have been more right! I settled in straight away, I have nice food every day, lots of cosy, warm beds and places to scratch. I like to look out at the lovely garden but Im happy being indoors now with people who love me, give me treats and make a fuss over me. I even have a collar now so I must have a family again- it feels great! As Ive been a street cat through so many winters my health needs to be closely monitored and I need regular nutritious meals and warmth for my tired bones. If you could help me in any way I would be eternally grateful and would give you a BIG welcome in my new forever home when you come to visit x''
''Hello. My name is Mia, I am 14 years old and I have lived with my family all my life. Recently they decided to move house so they took me to the vet and asked him to put me to sleep as they couldn't cope with the move AND me. As I have no apparent illness the vet refused and I have been looked after very well by all the kind nurses who work there. However, this was only a temporary place for me to stay, so I put up an appeal on facebook. Luckily someone who saw it contacted Lilas Legacy and I was brought here. Its been a hard road for me and Im very confused as I don't really understand why my family didn't want me to live with them anymore. Even though I have a nice new collar Im nervous that I might keep getting moved from one place to another and Im too old and tired for that now. All I want is somewhere safe and warm, regular food and some reassuring strokes from time to time. If you can help me in any way with food and medical bills then I will be contented to live out the rest of my days in peace and quiet here at Lilas Legacy Retirement Home and you can come and visit me whenever you like x''
Lila's Legacy is a self-funding organisation which relies solely on donations and is run as a totally separate enterprise from Ballyclare Cattery. We welcome ALL donations, big or small, regular or one off, and we guarantee that every penny we receive is spent on our residents.

Sponsor a Cat
Sponsoring one of our cats is one of the best ways you can help, providing them with shelter, warmth, food, medical care and the love they need. You are welcome to come and meet the cats, and you can choose which individual cat you'd like to sponsor. We ask for a minimum monthly donation of £3.00 per month from each sponsor. If you would like to sponsor one of our cats, please complete the contact form below. You will receive regular updates on your cat's progress and you can come to visit them upon appointment basis!
Make a Donation
Your donations really do make the difference and allow us to carry on our work to ensure a bright future for all the cats in our care at Lila's Legacy. You can make a single donation via the PayPal button below; remember that £10.00 can feed a cat for a month and £35 vaccinates a cat against diseases like enteritis and leukaemia. Any donation is appreciated!
Another great way to help is to provide food for Lila's Legacy any time you drop your cats off at the main cattery for their holiday! Why not pop an extra tin of cat food into your shopping trolley for the residents if you know you're visiting? We have tea and coffee making facilities in the sun-room, and everyone is welcome to spend time getting to know our elderly folk and their unique characters!
All of our Volunteers agree that giving end of life care to senior cats is one of the most rewarding experiences on the planet.
